This part of New Mexico is close to the edge of the Navajo Reservation, which breaks up into a series of one mile squares separated state or BLM land; the road crosses one such square but the badlands lie just outside the reservation. A full day of western adventure lies just a few miles south of Santa Fe on the Turquoise Trail National Scenic way. Also known as New Mexico Highway 14, the Turquoise Trail will carry you through scenic landscapes ranging from wide-open prairies to rugged mountain tops, and through ten thousand years of human history from an early “cave man” site to a modern movie set. Cerrillos Hills, New Mexico's 34th State Park, is a year-round, day-use park. One will cross paths with over 1,100 years of mining history along the five miles of trails and enjoy spectacular views of the Sandia, Ortiz, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. The quadrangle includes the west part of the village of La Cienega along its eastern border and includes the southeasternmost part of the Cochiti Pueblo reservation along its northwest side. The central part of the quadrangle consists of Santa Fe National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands, and parts of several Spanish-era land grants.
